Program:

Geothermal Lithium Mining, CTR Project in Salton Sea, CA

In 1900, the Lithium industry was practically nonexistent. The US produced 470 metric tons of lithium minerals with less than 10 tons of contained lithium metal. Today global production of Lithium metal is in excess of 240,000 tonnes per annum. Australia now is the world’s largest producer of Lithium, with almost double the production of Chile which is closely followed by China. The US currently reports one operating mine, Albemarle’s Silver Peak operation that produces ~4,000 tonnes Li-carbonate production.

The world lithium industry grew modestly after World War II, until the commercial introduction of Li-ion technology in 1991 slowly began to increase demand. The emergence of Li-rechargeable batteries for the exploding electric vehicle sector has since supercharged Lithium mining; global demand has increased ~17-fold since 2000 alone.

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technologies are challenging conventional hard rock and salar brine methods of lithium production. DLE lithium production from geothermal brines looks to have advantages that make it an attractive alternative. These are some of the considerations for the US to reestablish domestic production of Lithium as a critical material.
