- MAY JOINT HYBRID MEETING
For our May meeting, the SME Tucson Section will be hosting a joint meeting with our friends from the ASCE Geo-Institute Arizona Chapter. For those that want to join us in person, please go ahead and make your reservation by the registration deadline. Hexagon has graciously allowed us to host this event at their office and is our venue/drink sponsor.
Make sure to select your meal when making your reservation. Reservation deadline is Friday, May 3rd, at noon. If you choose to join virtually, you will receive a link prior to the event.
Program:
Dams and Levees are critical lifeline structures with significant impact on the social, economic, and environmental aspects of the local communities. In the United States, 85% of dams have reached their service life period by the year 2020. Hence, constant stability assessments and maintenance works are needed for the upkeep of this infrastructure. One of the key aspects of these structures is to understand the subsurface profile within the embankment and its property variation. Interpreting geomaterial behavior is a challenging problem owing to its spatial heterogeneity and uncertainties associated with geotechnical engineering practices. These variations and uncertainties make it necessary for engineers to contemplate new techniques and methods to analyze geomaterial properties and comprehend their generalized behaviors and patterns to evaluate the resiliency of the earthen structures including tailing dams, water dams, and levees. This seminar focuses on presenting a framework, methodologies, and key results to address the uncertainties associated with the geomaterial classification and to identify the localized critical zones. Based on the local site conditions, risks associated with these structures are identified to address their resiliency aspects. Once such critical zones are identified, necessary information can be conveyed to the dam safety engineers to take necessary remedial measures including the strengthening of these structures through ground improvement measures. Topics that will be covered in this presentation include identifying the localized critical zones within a hydraulic fill dam that are susceptible to different failure modes including liquefaction and slope stability.

Speaker:
Tejo Bheemasetti is an Assistant Professor in Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on both fundamental and applied aspects of Geotechnical Engineering to investigate and develop solutions to problematic geomaterials including mine tailings, subgrades, dams, levees, and highway embankments. Dr. Bheemasetti has published more than 50 publications in major Geotechnical Engineering and ASTM Journals. Dr. Bheemasetti is a member of standing technical committees on the Embankments, Dams, and Slopes committee; Engineering Geology and Site Characterization; Sustainability in Geotechnical Engineering; TRB- Foundations of Bridges and Other Structures. His research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Transportation (DOT), Environmental Foundation, Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS), and NASA. He is currently a reviewer for major geotechnical and transportation-related journals.
